MACROSOCIAL REPORT 2022

This 2022 Macro-Social Report (MSR) aims to update and build on the MSR published by the Presidency of South Africa in 2006. That document discussed major macro-social trends in the country, with a specific focus on core nation-building pillars such as social identity, social cohesion and socio-economic transformation.

This 2022 MSR captures the significant changes in South Africa’s political, social and economic spheres since 2006. It primarily explores the impact of these structural changes on macro-social trends, which are comprised of social networks; demographic changes in society; socio-economic mobility; and the organisation of social life and identity. This report also draws attention to the major domestic and global contextual shifts that continue to shape macro-social trends in South Africa.

ABOUT US

The Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection (MISTRA) and the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in partnership with the Presidency hosted the 25 Years of Democracy Conference in July 2019 to facilitate a reflective national discourse on the nation’s evolving democratisation process.

The multi-stakeholder conference offered South Africans a platform to engage and share varied experiences in a post-apartheid democracy for democratic consolidation and rebuilding participatory citizenship. These discussions would thus, form the basis for the Macro-Social Report 2022, which is a continuation of a process that was adopted during the July 2003 Cabinet Lekgotla that culminated in the release of the A Nation in the Making: A Discussion Document on Macro-social Trends in South Africa.

The Policy Coordination and Advisory Services (PCAS) of the Presidency published A Nation in the Making Macro- Social Report in 2006. The report discussed major macro-social trends in South Africa, with a specific focus on core nation-building pillars such as social identity, social cohesion and socio-economic transformation. These themes were explored within the overall context of the political economy that shaped the country’s development from 1994–2005.

South Africa’s society has experienced significant changes since 2006, and the Macro-Social Report 2022 captures these shifts in the political, social and economic spheres. It primarily explores how these structural changes impact macro-social trends, which are comprised of social networks; demographic changes in society; socio-economic mobility; and the organisation of social life and identity. It also draws attention to the major domestic and global contextual shifts that continue to shape macro-social trends in South African society.
